Cayo, Gilyard Each Net 16 In Loss At Davidson
01/19/2019 | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Solid outings from sophomores Jacob Gilyard and Nathan Cayo weren't enough for the Spiders to overcome a slow start and a career performance from Davidson's Luke Frampton as Richmond fell at reigning A-10 champion Davidson Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats held Richmond scoreless over the first six-plus minutes of the game, amassing a 9-0 lead before Grant Golden broke the Spiders scoring drought on a layup with 13:38 remaining in the first period.
"We emphasize starting games well and we weren't able to do that," said coach Chris Mooney. "I thought we actually had good looks early. When they don't fall for you … you're a little more desperate defensively, you're a little more tense as you're playing in the game so the start is really critical. I thought we had opportunities at the start and we need to take better advantage of them."
Richmond climbed back into the game, pulling within four of the Wildcats before Frampton hit a trio of three-pointers in the final 3:30 before halftime, capping the scoring with a three from the corner with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to put Davidson up 34-24 at the break.
Frampton hit two more three-pointers in the first minute of the second half to spur an 8-0 Davidson run and put the Wildcats up 18. Richmond was able to narrow the final margin -- but only slightly – over the remainder of the game, ultimately falling 75-62. The loss snapped a streak of four straight wins by the Spiders against Davidson.
Richmond didn't hit its first three-pointer until the 13-minute mark of the second half and finished the game just 6-21 from three-point range. Davidson was 14-30 from deep, with Frampton hitting eight for a game-high 24 points.
Gilyard and Cayo each scored 16 to lead the Spiders. Cayo hit on six of his seven shots from the field and matched a career high with eight rebounds, most on the team. Gilyard added a team-high five assists.
Sophomore Grant Golden also reached double figures for the Spiders, finishing with 14 points and six rebounds.
Richmond will return to action Wednesday night in Philadelphia with a road game at Saint Joseph's. The game will tip at 7 PM and be shown on ESPN Plus.
