Lee, McGuigan, Miller and Plantier Named 2019 Team Captains

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. –D.J. Lee (Frankfurt, Ill.), Brendan McGuigan (Austin, Texas), Tim Miller (Wayne, Pa.) and Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.) were named team captains for the 2019 baseball season as announced by head coach Tracy Woodson Tuesday morning. These four were named captains in a team vote held Monday night.
Lee is a redshirt senior and will be set to make his 147th career start on opening day. The left-handed hitter owns a .266 career average in 545 at bats, with 39 extra-base hits. Lee led the Spiders in stolen bases in each of the last three seasons, totaling 48 bags during his career. In 2017, Lee earned the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award as well as being named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2016. Lee is an exceptional leader for the Spiders as this will be his third-consecutive season being named a team captain.
McGuigan is another fifth-year player in 2019, this is his first season being named team captain. The right-handed pitcher appeared in 38 games for the Spiders and has started nine during his career where he's logged 83.2 innings and recorded 73 strikeouts. McGuigan owns 4.09 career-ERA, with a 3.38 ERA last year. Earlier in his career, McGuigan endured Tommy John surgery his sophomore season and has bounced back to strike out 30 hitters in 34.1 innings of work during his redshirt sophomore and junior seasons. He's slated to be a weekend starter for the Spiders this spring.
Miller returns for his redshirt sophomore season in 2019. Last season's Friday night starter started 14 games, working in 74.2 innings, striking out 63 hitters to earn a 3.13 ERA. In two seasons on the hill, Miller has picked up six wins in 83.1 innings. This is Miller's second-season being named a team captain, serving in the same role during his redshirt freshman year in 2018. The right-handed pitcher was also named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week once last season and was named to the A-10's All-Rookie Team following the season.
Rounding out this year's captains is Plantier. The infielder/designated hitter will be entering his second season in the red, white and navy. In his first season with the Spiders, Plantier hit for a .291 average in 148 at bats and led the team with 14 doubles. He added five home runs and led the Spiders with a .486 slugging percentage. Plantier was named A-10 Player of the Week for his efforts during the week before May 14th, helping the Spiders go 4-1 during the week, including a three-game sweep of La Salle.
Lee, McGuigan, Miller, Plantier and the rest of the Spiders begin their season in just 17 days as Richmond will travel to the Atlanta area for opening weekend. The Spiders will play games against Georgia State, Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State on consecutive days to begin the season.
