Gilyard Ties School Record For Threes in Loss at Dayton
01/06/2019 | Men's Basketball
DAYTON, Ohio – A school-record-tying eight three-pointers and 24 points for Jacob Gilyard weren't nearly enough for the Spiders Sunday afternoon at Dayton as Richmond dropped its Atlantic 10 opener by a score 72-48.
The Flyers jumped out to an 11-6 lead behind nine early points from Josh Cunningham. After a pair of back-to-back three-pointers by Gilyard made the score 16-12 Dayton, the Spiders went more than nine minutes without scoring before Noah Yates broke the drought with a deep three-pointer at the 1:52 mark of the first half.
Dayton led 29-18 at halftime, as Richmond hit just six of its 26 shots from the field in the first half (23.1 percent). With Nathan Cayo limited to five minutes by a pair of early fouls, the Spiders had difficulty working the ball inside against Dayton's zone, shooting 20 of their 26 first-half shots from three-point range.
Cayo returned to make the first basket of the second half to cut the Flyers lead to nine, but Dayton responded with a 10-0 run to take a 39-20 lead with 16 minutes remaining and continued to expand the lead throughout the second half.
Richmond was able to work the ball inside more after halftime, but the Spiders still connected on just 34 percent of their shots in the second half, despite attempting nearly half of their field goals (17 of 35) from inside the paint.
For the game, Richmond shot a school-record 38 three-pointers, making 11 (29 percent). Overall, the Spiders hit on just 18 of their 61 shots from the field, a season-low 29.5 percent.
The Spiders will end a three-week road trip on Wednesday when they return to the Robins Center for the first time since December 19 to take on Rhode Island in the conference home opener. Tip time is 7 PM and the game will be shown on MASN2 and ESPN Plus.
