Spiders Late Run Falls Short At Fordham

BRONX, NY. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team outscored Fordham, 17-6, in the fourth quarter but fell short 60-48 on the road Wednesday afternoon at Rose Gym. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) led the team with 12 points and three rebounds.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with nine points and five rebounds. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points off the bench going 5-for-7 from the field.
Fordham's Bre Cavanaugh scored a game-high 20 points with 12 rebounds and dished out seven assists. The Rams outrebounded Richmond 40-24 in the win. The Spiders fall to 3-12, 0-2 in Atlantic 10 play and Fordham improves to 11-5, 2-0 in the A-10.
A fast paced first quarter saw the Spiders open up a 6-3 lead after Parson scored six-straight points. Fordham answered with a couple of three-pointers to take a 9-8 lead with 5:52 left in the quarter. Bre Cavanaugh drilled a three-pointer to give the Rams a 15-10 lead.
Carpenter got the Spiders within one point with back-to-back jumpers to make the score 15-14. Fordham's Cavanaugh hit two free throws to end the first quarter and give the Rams a 17-14 lead.
Fordham pushed ahead 23-14 in the second quarter off a layup by Mary Goulding. Richmond started to attack the basket with a 6-0 run to get within three points at 23-20 with 4:22 remaining in the quarter.
The Rams outscored the Spiders 11-5 to end the second quarter and take a 34-25 lead. Richmond was in foul trouble as three key players finished with two fouls apiece.
Carpenter and Parson lead the team with six points after two quarters.
Fordham broke open the game with a 20-6 third quarter increasing its lead to 23 points at 54-31 entering the fourth quarter. Parson scored all six points in the third quarter but the team only shot 16.7 percent from the field.
Richmond had a solid fourth quarter holding Fordham to just six points and only hit 2-for-14 from the field. Hinds-Clarke opened the fourth quarter scoring five-straight points with a couple of steals.
With 1:42 remaining, the Spiders went on another run cutting the lead to 15 after a three-pointer by Carpenter made the score 60-45. Sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) buried a three-pointer to make the final score 60-48.
The Spiders head back to Richmond to host rival VCU for the Sonabank/P.O.W.E.R. crosstown showdown on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 6 p.m. at the Robins Center.
