Richmond Falls To VCU In Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team only trailed by four points after two quarters before VCU took over and earned a 68-43 win in the Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. crosstown showdown Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) continues to be a bright spot off the bench tying her career-high with 14 points off 6-for-12 shooting. Carpenter also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) had a solid game inside with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) finished with seven points and six turnovers.
Richmond drops to 3-13 on the season and is 0-3 in Atlantic 10 play. VCU improves to 11-5 with a perfect 3-0 record in A-10 action.
VCU opened the game with an 11-0 run with nine points coming from sophomore Tera Reed. Richmond bounced back with a run of their own scoring nine-straight points capped by a layup from Carpenter to make the score 11-9.
The Rams closed the first quarter with a 7-0 run to lead 18-9, including a late layup by Kseniya Malashka at the buzzer.
In the second quarter, Carpenter continued to play well hitting a three-pointer to cut VCU's lead to 18-12. Richmond got within four points at 22-18 off a fast break layup from freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.). Carpenter ended the second quarter with a team-high 10 points off 4-for-6 shooting.
Hinds-Clarke added seven points and six rebounds after two quarters.
VCU stormed ahead scoring the first seven points in the third quarter forcing Richmond to use an early timeout with 7:32 on the clock. The Spiders answered after cutting VCU's lead to seven points at 34-27 after a layup by Hinds-Clarke.
The Rams pushed their lead to 13 points at 44-31 after Danielle Hammond made two free throws with 1:18 remaining in the third.
Richmond's Hinds-Clarke made another layup with 28 seconds on the clock but VCU hit two more free throws to close out the third quarter with a 46-33 lead.
In the final quarter, VCU never let up increasing the advantage to 20 points at 56-36 thanks to a 10-3 run. Richmond would be outscored 22-10 in the fourth and drop their third-straight game.
VCU's Reed led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Hammond added 13 points off the bench.
The Spiders will start a two-game road trip starting with Davidson on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. in Davidson, N.C.
