RICHMOND, Va. – Spider cross country is back in action this Friday as they head to North Carolina for the Pirate Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University. The women will begin the competition with a 6k race beginning at 4 p.m., and the men's 8k race is set for a 4:40 p.m. start time.
This will be the second time this season the women will be running a 6k race. The first 6k race of the season took place at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Kate Dickow (Lititz, Pa.) has won three of the Atlantic 10's Female Rookie of the Week awards and will look to improve on her 6k time of 23:15.5 set at Panorama Farms.
The top finisher for the Spiders in the first 6k race was sophomore Johanna Lupica (Richmond, Va.). Lupica finished with a 22:28.3 time, setting a new career best. Senior Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) was the second Spider to cross the finish line, crossing at 22:47.0. The freshmen tandem of Anna George (Montville, N.J.) and Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.) were the next two in, finishing their first career 6k races with times of 23:01.3 and 23:08.6, respectively.
Others who ran the 6k race at the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational included Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.), Caitlin O'Hare (Middletown, N.J.), Erika Echternach (Lititz, Pa.) and Kendra Smither (Richmond, Va.). This quartet finished the 6k race with times of 24:02.1, 24:20.5, 24:50.6 and 25:35.0, respectively.
Last time out, the Spiders set multiple personal records in the 5k race at the Great American Cross Country Festival and will look to continue that trend this weekend in Greenville.
The men will race the 8k race for the fourth time this season on Friday evening. Senior Miles Clikeman (North Chesterfield, Va.) won two of the last three 8k courses, winning the individual titles at the Mason Invite and the Great American Cross Country Festival. Clikeman set a new personal record at the Great American Cross Country Festival on October 5th, turning in an 8k time of 24:30.1, nearly 11 seconds faster than his previous record.
Peter Borger (Malvern, Pa.) has been another tough runner for the Spiders this season, continually turning in top five finishes. In the Great American Cross Country Festival, Borger turned in a time of 24:40.7, setting a personal record of his own and improving by nearly a minute from the Patriot Invitational earlier this season.
Others setting personal records at the Great American Cross Country Festival included Trey Burleson (Moseley, Va.), Patrick Sutphin (Richmond, Va.), James Flanagan (Danville, Calif.), Paul Knepple (Point Pleasant, N.J.), Noah Yuro (Howell, N.Y.) Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.), James Quinn (Nutley, N.J.) and Tanner Crochet (Monmouth, N.J.). The Spiders finished the last 8k race with seven finishers in the top 20.
