Spiders Wrap Up Fall Season at Cardinal Cup
10/20/2019 | Women's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Richmond Spiders women's golf team concluded its fall season on Sunday at Louisville's Cardinal Cup, recording a team score of 311 (+23) to finish in 16th place at 946 (+82). With junior Lizzie Reedy sidelined with an injury, Richmond had to count all four of its individual scores towards its team total in each round as opposed to having the ability to discard its lowest score. Even with the handicap, the Spiders improved their team score in each of the event's three rounds. Richmond's 311 on Sunday was one shot better than it's 312 total on Saturday and a 12-shot improvement over Friday's 323.Â
"We dealt with the adversity very well," said first-year coach Calle Nielson of her short-handed lineup. "It was a good challenge and showed our players how important each stroke is for the team. I felt like they were under more pressure than ever before knowing each of their scores were going to count every day. I think it was a really good learning experience for me and for the team!"
Freshman Vicky Zhu was the top Spider on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 45th in the field of 95 at 229 (+13). Sophomore Naomi Mitchell finished four shots behind at 233 (+17), tied for 61st. Freshman Muskan Uppal rebounded from an opening-round 87 with rounds of 74 and 78 to finish tied for 79th at 239 (+23). Sophomore Emily Ward tied for 90th at 245 (+29).Â
Mitchell led the Spiders with a 76.5 stroke average during the fall season, while Zhu (9th at Bucknell Invitational) and Ward (10th at Kingsmill Invitational) each recorded top-10 finishes. Uppal recorded the lowest individual round by a Spider during the fall, shooting 71 (-1) in the third round of Furman's Lady Paladin Invitational.Â
Richmond will open its spring season February 17th at the Old Friends Invitational at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club in Tampa, Fla. The Spiders season is scheduled to conclude with the Patriot League Championship on April 17th-19th in Lewisburg, Pa. at the Bucknell Golf Club.Â
