Spiders Drop Tough Road Game at Rhode Island, 1-0
10/20/2019 | Women's Soccer
KINGSTON, RI. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team fell short on the road at Rhode Island, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at the URI Soccer Complex. The Spiders have lost three-straight road games.
"Really disappointing day today," head coach Marty Beall. "We simply weren't good enough defensively or offensively. We can't expect to win games when we miss four breakaways and when we aren't dangerous on set pieces. Thankfully, we still have two more games to make the A-10 Tournament. I believe this group can learn from these moments and respond in a positive way."
Richmond (6-8-2, 3-5 A-10) had multiple chances on offense getting behind the defense but didn't lead to goals. The Spiders were outshot 12-7 in the game and only had four corner kicks in the loss.
Freshman Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) made a career-high seven saves in the tough 1-0 loss. Senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) had two shots, including one on goal.
In the 56th minute, the Rams took the lead after Emma Derry found Rebecca D'Anna behind the Spider defense and scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Beam had a shot in the 65th minute but Rhode Island keeper Julia Freeman made the save. Junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) took a shot on goal in the 84th minute but Freeman came away with the stop.
In the first half, Richmond had the first chance in the seventh minute as freshman Emma Kennedy (Blacksburg, Va.) fired a shot on goal but Rhode Island's keeper Freeman made the save. Kennedy finished with a team-best three shots.
Helbling had four of her seven saves in the first half. The Spiders still have two games remaining in their quest to make the A-10 Tournament.
Richmond will continue its road trip with a matchup at first-place Saint Louis on Thursday, Oct. 24, with kickoff at 8 p.m.
