Spiders Drop 1-0 Contest To No. 11 Delaware In Defensive Battle

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team held off the visiting Delaware Blue Hens for the first 47 minutes of play, but the No. 11 team in the country scored late in the game to take a 1-0 win on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.

The Spiders' went on the attack early, as Elise Zwicklbauer took the game's first shot which was saved by the Delaware goalkeeper before Regan McCrossan's shot was saved by a Blue Hen defender a few minutes later.

Each team managed a shot in the second period, but both defenses held strong to send their teams into halftime in a scoreless tie.

The Blue Hens put on the offensive pressure in the third quarter, rattling off four shots which were all saved by goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin. Two of Conklin's saves were in quick succession off a Delaware corner to keep the Spiders in the game.

The game winner came in the fourth quarter with just under 13 minutes to play, as Delaware's Femke Strien's reverse shot went high into the goal. Despite a late push from the Spiders, the home squad could manage a shot in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Hens held an 11-5 advantage in shots, as well as a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Conklin finished with seven saves in cage for the Spiders, holding Delaware scoreless off corner attempts. Zwicklbauer led the Spiders with three shots on the day.

The Spiders return to action on Sunday, October 6, when they host James Madison at Crenshaw Field at 12 p.m. The Spiders will celebrate 100 Years of Field Hockey before the game with an on-field recognition that will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m.
