JMU Scores Late For 2-1 Win Over Spiders

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team scored less than five minutes into the Spiders' rivalry game versus James Madison on Sunday afternoon, but the Dukes countered in the first quarter and again with under four minutes to play in the fourth to take a 2-1 win at Crenshaw Field.

Before the game, the Spiders recognized alumnae of the program on the field in a 100 Years of Field Hockey ceremony. Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt presented Dean of Westhampton College, Mia Reinoso Genoni, with a commemorative field hockey stick in recognition of the strong bond and history between Richmond Athletics and Westhampton College.

Steffie Bongers started the game's scoring, capitalizing on the Spiders' first penalty corner of the day with a straight shot past the JMU goalkeeper. Elise Zwicklbauer inserted on the play to log her fourth assist of the season.

Bongers' shot would be the only one for the home team in the opening quarter, as the Dukes outshot the Spiders 6-1 in the first 15 minutes. JMU finally scored to even the game at 1-1 with under a minute remaining in the quarter when an attacker collected the ball off of a defensive save by Becky Carter and put the ball in the back of the cage.

The Dukes continued their offensive dominance in the second quarter, taking a 5-0 shot advantage, but goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin held JMU off the board with four saves, including a penalty stroke saves that would have put the Dukes in front.

The Spider attack stepped up in the third and fourth quarters, rattling off nine shots including five from Addie Nash, but JMU posted the game winner with 3:52 to play off a fast break and held off Richmond in the closing minutes for the 2-1 win.

The Spiders return to action on Saturday, October 12, when they travel to face Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 action. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Eastern.
