Football Hosts Albany Saturday On Family Weekend

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team returns home to Robins Stadium Saturday hosting Colonial Athletic Association foe Albany. Game time is set for 2 p.m. and the centerpiece of the University's Family Weekend on campus.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington Plus and online via at www.FloFootball.com with Bob Black and Chris Anderson on the call. The game will carried on FloFootball.com for a fee and is included in the season package for the Colonial Athletic Association. The game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond and TuneIn with Matt Smith and Lane Casadonte on the call. Saturday's game marks seventh meeting between Richmond and Albany. All six meetings prior have come since the 2013 season when the Great Danes joined the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders are 6-0 all-time against Albany, winning three games both at home at Robins Stadium and on the road in the capital city of New York. The last four meetings have been decided by seven points or less with the last two games being decided on last second game-winning field goals by the Spiders.
Last season, Richmond came out of Albany with a 27-24 victory. Former Spider Griffin Trau hit a 25-yard field goal in the final minute to secure the Spiders' win. Quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) picked up his first career victory in his second career start, passing for 286 yards and rushing for 50 as the Spiders produced 438 yards of total offense. The last time Albany came to Robins Stadium it was one of the top games in stadium history with the Spiders posting a 41-38 double overtime victory over the then 24th-ranked Great Danes. Defensive back Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) blocked the Albany kick in the second overtime and Trau nailed a 34-yard field goal to send the Spiders home victorious. Former Spider Kyle Lauletta three for 353 yards and tallied four total touchdowns in the win.
Richmond enters Saturday's game ranking first in the Colonial Athletic Association and third in the nation in completion percentage at 72.9 percent (78-of-107). Redshirt sophomore quarterback Beau English (Stevenson, Md.) leads the way at 75.4 percent, connecting on 40-of-53 through the air this year. His 75.3 percent ranks second in the NCAA this season. Additionally, Mancuso has connected on 69.2 percent (36-of-52) through the air, ranking seventh in the nation and third in the CAA.
Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) made his first career start last week against Fordham and posted a career-high 13 tackles. Wheeler ranks second on the Spiders in tackles with 29 on the year, despite only making one start this year. His 29 tackles (7.25 per game) ranks 14th in the CAA overall and is tied for the top mark among all league freshmen with Tre'Von Jones of Elon. Noah Plack of Delaware is third among league freshman at 5.4 tackles per game.
Graduate transfer wide receivers Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) and Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) have come into the program and had an immediate impact on the Spiders. Fessler leads the team with 23 receptions for 312 yards receiving, ranking fifth and seventh in the CAA respectively. Fuller leads the team with 360 yards receiving and is second on the team with 21 receptions, ranking third and seventh respectively. Fessler and Fuller have combined for 672 yards receiving this year through four games. That total ranks fourth in the CAA for a receiving tandem, trailing Rhode Island (Aaron Parker & Isaiah Coulter, 929 yards), Maine (Jaquan Blair & Earnest Edwards, 877) and Albany (Juwan Green & Jerah Reeves, 744).
Albany enters Saturday's game with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 mark in CAA play having defeated William & Mary at home last weekend. The Great Danes are one of the top offenses in the conference, averaging 35.2 points per game. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jeff Undercuffler has passed for 1,213 yards and 14 touchdowns this year with Green and Reeves accounting for 744 yards receiving. Running back Karl Mofor is averaging 103.4 yards per game on the ground, for 517 yards rushing this season.
