Richmond Drops Tough Battle Against George Washington, 1-0
10/06/2019 | Women's Soccer
Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team gave first-place George Washington all it could handle in a tight 1-0 loss Sunday at President's Field at River Road. The Spiders played even for 77 minutes before a GW goal came at the 77:22 mark.
"I am very pleased with our girls," head coach Marty Beall said. "We competed really well, stuck to our team tactics, and played great for 89 of the 90 minutes. Unfortunately, we broke down one time and George Washington punished us for it. A great result for our team so it was a great learning experience to face a top team. We will recover and get ready for St. Bonaventure next weekend."
Richmond (5-6-2, 2-3 A-10) played one of its best defensive games of the season holding George Washington (9-1-2, 5-0 A-10) to just one goal on eight shots.
In the first half, George Washington outshot the Spiders, 4-2, but both teams had equal chances at goal. Richmond had its opportunities early as junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) took a shot on net but George Washington keeper Machi Tamaki made the save.
In the 44th minute, GW's Allie Nornes put a shot on goal but redshirt freshman Claire Hinkle (Tipp City, Ohio) made one of her three saves in her second start of the season.
Richmond was more aggressive offensively in the second half as freshman Nora Santelli (Shaker Heights, Ohio) took a shot from just outside the box but it went wide of the net in the 64th minute.
The Colonials took the lead after Nornes scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Hannah Zaluski in the 78th minute.
Richmond couldn't find the tying goal in the final 12 minutes but pushed first-place GW to the limit in the 1-0 loss.
The Spiders will get a full week to prepare for a long road trip against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Oct. 13, at 1 p.m.
