Cross Country Set for Atlantic 10 Championships in Leesburg
11/01/2019 | Cross Country
RICHMOND, Va. – Spider cross country is back on the course this weekend as it gets set for the Atlantic 10 Championships at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, hosted by George Mason University. This will be the second time this season the Spiders will be running at The Oatlands, competing at the George Mason Invitational in September. In that race, Richmond was the top team on the women's side and the men's team took second, each in a field of seven teams, and six from the A-10. The men will compete in a 5-mile race beginning at approximately 10 a.m., and women will be competing in a 5k race at 10:50 a.m.
The women's team has won three of the last four A-10 championships and are the reigning A-10 Champs. Richmond had all five of its runners finish in the top 13 at Pole Green Park in 2018 to earn the trophy. Three of the Spiders top five finishers from last season moved on, but Richmond reloaded with a talented freshman class. Rookie Kate Dickow (Lititz, Pa.) has won four A-10 Rookie of the Week awards this season and has consistently been one of Richmond's top finishers. Other outstanding freshmen have been Anna George (Montville, N.J.), Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) and Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.).
Ave Grosenheider (Madison, Wis.) and Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) will be counted on for senior leadership as they have been a part of two A-10 Championship teams during their careers. Johanna Lupica (Richmond, Va.), Caroline Robelen (Glen Allen, Va.) and Erika Echternach (Lititz, Pa.) all competed in the A-10 race last season. Lupica improved her personal record in the 5k earlier this season at the Great American Cross Country Festival, while Robelen and Echternach will look to improve on their career-bests set at the A-10 Championship last season.
The Spiders' top finisher on the men's side a season ago was Miles Clikeman (Chesterfield, Va.). Clikeman, who finished third or better in all but one race this season, was an 11th place finisher at the A-10 meet a year ago. Clikeman's last five-mile race came at the A-10 Championship in 2018. This season, cross country has participated in several 8-kilometer races, just a 0.03 mile difference. He ran his fastest 8-kilometer race time this season at the Spiders' last meet, the East Carolina Pirate Invitational, where his time was nearly a full minute faster than his 5-mile time.
The underclassmen core of Peter Borger (Malvern, Pa.), Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.), James Quinn (Nutley, N.J.) and Patrick Sutphin (Mechanicsville, Va.), gained valuable experience in the A-10 race a season ago. In the 2018 A-10 Championship race, Sutphin, Burleson and Borger finished in the mid-40s. Each improved their personal 8k race times this season, setting personal records at the Great American Cross Country Fest to start October.
The upperclassmen crew of Trey Burleson (Moseley, Va.), Paul Knepple (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and Noah Yuro (Howell, N.J.) have experience in the A-10 Championship race, competing in a minimum of two A-10 races in their careers. Burleson, an All-Rookie Team performer last season, turned in an 8k PR 40 seconds faster than his five-mile time at the Great American Cross Country Fest. Knepple and Yuro also improved their PRs this season, with their top times coming in Greenville at the Pirate Invitational.
