11/02/2019 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team outscored No. 20 Stony Brook 20-7 in the second quarter and scored the final 17 points of the game en route to a 30-10 Colonial Athletic Association victory Saturday afternoon on Homecoming at Robins Stadium. The Spiders have won three-straight games against ranked CAA opponents and remain in second place in the CAA with a 4-1 record.
The Spider defense was stellar once again holding the Seawolves to just 10 points and only 72 rushing yards. Stony Brook entered the game averaging 29 points per game and rushing for 225 yards per contest until Saturday. The Spiders also held the Seawolves off the board in the second half, which was impressive as Stony Brook already has three fourth quarter rallies to its ledger this season.
Richmond held Stony Brook's quarterback Tyquell Fields, the reigning CAA Offensive Player of the Week, to 12-for-25 passing and 206 and an interception. Fields was also held to just one yard on the ground on four carries. Running back Ty Son Lawton, the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, was limited to 35 yards on 16 carries as Stony Brook averaged just 2.4 yards per carry.
Junior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) led the way with seven tackles, including a sack while freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) also had seven tackles. Graduate transfer corner back Brandon Feamster (Exton, Pa.) posted a fumble recovery and a key interception in the fourth quarter to thwart any thought of a Stony Brook comeback.
Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) accounted for 406 total yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Mancuso finished 23-for-30 for 318 yards passing, including two touchdowns to graduate transfer Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.). On the ground, he rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries and ran for two more touchdowns. Mancuso now has 10 touchdowns passing and eight touchdowns on the ground this season.
Graduate transfer wide receiver Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) caught a career-high 11 balls for 147 receiving yards to lead the team. Fessler had eight receptions in the first half to lead the Spiders to a 20-10 lead at the break. Fuller finished with six catches for 70 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman running back Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 44 yards rushing and a career-high 72 yards receiving in the victory.
Both defenses started well as Stony Brook held just a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spiders had two turnovers in the first quarter on offense but their defense was able to hold the Seawolves to only one field goal, swinging the momentum to the Spiders.
Richmond scored the game's first touchdown in the second quarter, executing a 12-play, 90-yard drive that took up 5:21 on the clock. The Spiders converted three third down plays on the drive, including a 23-yard pass to Dykes and a big 10-yard pass to redshirt junior tight end Andrew Tsangeos (Pasadena, Calif.) that brought the Spiders into the red zone. Mancuso capped the drive with a 10-yard scoring run giving the Spiders a 6-3 lead.
Richmond extended its lead to 13-3 after forcing a Stony Brook punt. Mancuso connected with Fuller on a 40-yard touchdown pass, marking his seventh scoring catch of the year capping a four-play drive.
Stony Brook (5-4, 2-3 CAA) responded with a touchdown of its own as Fields connected on a 57-yard pass with Delante Hellams making it a three-point game at 13-10. The Spiders had an answer back though, turning in a 7-play, 71-yard drive capped by a three-yard scoring pass from Mancuso to Fuller and the 20-10 lead. The score was setup by a 44-yard pass from Mancuso to Fessler that brought the ball inside the Stony Brook 10-yard line.
Richmond added to its lead in the third quarter with another long drive, this one covering 80-yards. The big play in the drive was a 50-yard pass from Mancuso to Dykes that brought the ball down to the Stony Brook 16-yard line. Three Mancuso rushes later, the Spiders scored on a six-yard run by the quarterback for the 27-10 advantage.
The Spider defense came up with its biggest play on the ensuing Stony Brook possession. The Seawolves were driving down the field and had a 32-yard pitch and catch from Fields to Nick Anderson but redshirt freshman Nile Harris (Greensboro, N.C.) stripped the ball from Anderson and Feamster was there to scoop it up ending the threat in the Spiders' territory.
Richmond added a 31-yard field goal in the fourth quarter from freshman Jake Larson (Baltimore, Md.) and the Spiders' defense held strong down the stretch. Stony Brook was pressing for points late and Fields was intercepted by Feamster as the Spider 2-yard line ending any doubt in the contest. Richmond forced a turnover on downs on the final Stony Brook possession guaranteeing no late game drama for the Seawolves.
Richmond hits the road next weekend travelling nationally ranked Villanova for the Spiders' fourth-straight CAA game against a nationally ranked opponent. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
