Richmond has tipped the scales in the series back to even with its run of recent success. The Spiders have won the past two meetings and seven out of the last eight meetings. Richmond has won 12 out of the past 15 meetings with the Tribe since 2005, clawing back to evening the series all-time. In fact, after last year's 10-6 Spider victory over the Tribe in Williamsburg, the series is tied for the first time since 1989 when it was deadlocked at 47-47-5 after a William & Mary 22-10 victory.
The Spiders are looking to take the series lead for the first time since 1988 with a victory Saturday. The last time Richmond held the series leads was November 19, 1988 with a 24-19 victory at home, taking a 47-46-5 advantage in the series. Since that season, William, & Mary has held at least a one game advantage in the series and led by as many as nine games (59-50-5 in 2004).
The closely battled series has seen some great games in its history with 41 games being decided by seven points of less in the 129-year history, including the past two meetings. Richmond recorded a 10-6 victory in Williamsburg last season in a defensive battle between the two teams. The Spiders limited William & Mary to just 212 yards of total offense and only 59 yards rushing. Richmond forced three turnovers in the victory and wide receiver Caleb Drake caught the game's lone touchdown.
The last time The Capital Cup was played in Richmond, the Spiders came home with a 27-20 victory at Robins Stadium. Running back Xavier Goodall led the way with a career-high 180 yards rushing, including two touchdowns on the ground. Quarterback Kyle Lauletta capped off his incredible career by setting a single-season record for total offense, finishing with 3,827 yards, including 3,737 though the air and 31 total touchdowns.
Richmond enters Saturday's game with a 5-6 overall record and a 4-3 mark in Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders are trying to finish the year with a 6-6 overall record and pick up five wins in CAA play for the first time since 2016. Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) has connected on 137-of-213 this year for 1,858 yards and 12 passing touchdowns. Mancuso leads the Spiders on the ground as well with 648 yards rushing on 121 carries and 10 rushing touchdowns.
Graduate wide receiver Keyston Fuller (Griffin, Ga.) leads the team with 940 yards receiving and needs 60 yards Saturday to become just the 10th Spider all-time to reach the 1,000-yard mark in a year. Fuller leads the team with 10 receiving touchdowns. Graduate wide receiver Charlie Fessler (Erie, Pa.) leads the team with 60 receptions on the year for 785 yards.
Defensively, junior linebacker Tyler Dressler (Covington, Va.) leads the team and the CAA in tackles with 94 on the year, averaging 9.4 per game. Freshman linebacker Tristan Wheeler (Bethlehem, Pa.) is second on the team and leads all freshmen in the country with 93 tackles. He is looking to become the first freshman in NCAA FCS football to reach the 100-tackle mark in a season since 2017.
William & Mary enters Saturday's game with a 4-7 overall record and a 2-5 mark in CAA play. The Tribe is under the guidance of first-year head coach and former Richmond coach Mike London. William & Mary is 1-4 on the road this season with its lone win coming at Elon as the Tribe has won two out of its last three games.
Freshman quarterback Hollis Mathis has connected on 57-of-127 for 856 yards and three touchdowns this year. Mathis has been dynamic on the ground, rushing for 499 yards on 120 carries and eight touchdowns. William & Mary is averaging 190.5 yards rushing this season while passing for 158.1 yards per game.
