WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The University of Richmond field hockey team dropped its regular season finale on Sunday afternoon, falling at No. 20 Wake Forest, 4-0.
Â
The Spiders outshot the Demon Deacons in the first quarter, taking three shots off of two penalty corner opportunities in the opening minutes, but couldn't capitalize. Neither team could manage a goal in the first 15 minutes.
Â
Wake Forest took the lead with just over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, but the Spiders continued to pressure through the remainder of the half. Steffie Bongers managed to take her third shot of the game off the Spiders' fourth penalty corner opportunity, but it was saved by the Demon Deacons' goalkeeper to keep the score at 1-0 at the halftime break.
Â
The host team capitalized on two opportunities early in the third quarter, taking a 3-0 lead less than midway through the period. The Spiders held off the Wake Forest attack for the next 19 minutes, but the Demon Deacons made it a 4-0 game with just over five minutes to play.
Â
Despite the final score, the Spiders and Demon Deacons were even in both shots and penalty corners.
Â
The Spiders return to action for postseason play on Friday, November 8, when they compete in the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinal round. Game times and matchups for Friday's games will be announced by the Atlantic 10 Conference. Richmond wrapped up regular season conference play in a three-way tie for second place, matching Lock Haven and UMass with a 6-2 record.
