UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Elise Zwicklbauer scored twice and added an assist as the No. 3 seed University of Richmond field hockey team took a commanding 3-1 win over No. 2 seed UMass in Friday afternoon's Atlantic 10 Semifinal game at Crenshaw Field.
With the win, the Spiders advance to Saturday's Atlantic 10 Championship, their first trip to the final since 2015.
After the Minutewomen held possession on their offensive end for the opening minutes, Zwicklbauer tallied her first goal of the day with just 57 seconds to play in the first quarter, scoring on a straight hard shot from the top of the circle to give the Spiders the lead.
The Spiders built on their lead in the second quarter, as Zwicklbauer inserted the ball to sophomore Steffie Bongers on a penalty corner, whose shot found the back of the cage for the 2-0 advantage in the 23rd minute.
Just over six minutes later, it was Zwicklbauer again, this time deflecting the ball in off a shot from Jessica Hendry. The goal gave Zwicklbauer five points on the day, tying her career high.
The Spiders had their chances in the second half, but couldn't convert despite outshooting the Minutewomen 8-6 in the final 30 minutes. UMass cut into the Spider lead early in the fourth quarter with a high reverse shot that sailed past Frankie-Lynne Conklin, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders took a 3-1 win.
Richmond wrapped up the day with a 14-8 overall edge in shots, as well as a 5-4 advantage in penalty corners. Conklin finished with a pair of saves.
The Spiders are now set to face off with No. 1 seed and 13th-ranked Saint Joseph's, who has won the last two Atlantic 10 titles. Saturday's Championship game at Crenshaw Field will start at 1 p.m.
