Defense Leads Spiders Past Randolph-Macon In Preseason Tune-Up
11/03/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A solid defensive effort led the Richmond Spiders over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets 70-57 in an exhibition Sunday evening. Utilizing a man-to-man scheme instead of their traditional matchup zone, the Spiders held Randolph-Macon to 34 percent shooting from the field and 24 percent from three-point range in the win.
"Defensively I thought we were pretty good," said head coach Chris Mooney. "They didn't shoot a great percentage and I feel like even a lot of the shots they made we challenged and contested."
On the offensive side, the Spiders were led by junior forward and preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection Grant Golden, who scored 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and added a team-high six assists.
Richmond opened the game on a 17-5 run as the Spiders made their first three shots from three-point range. But Randolph-Macon responded with an 8-0 run to close the gap to four with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Yellow Jackets took their first and only lead of the game when a three-pointer put them ahead 26-25 with 1:41 remaining in the first half, but Richmond scored the final five points before halftime to take a 30-26 lead at intermission.
After Randolph-Macon opened the second-half scoring with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one, the Spiders responded with an 11-0 run to push the lead to a dozen at 41-29. Richmond's advantage mostly stayed in double digits for the remainder of the game as the Spiders rolled to the 13-point victory.
Golden's 17 points led four Spiders in double figures. Junior guard Blake Francis, making his Richmond debut after transferring from Wagner 18 months ago, scored 15 points and added a team-high four steals. Junior guard Nick Sherod, returning to the court for the first time since tearing his left ACL last November, had 11 points and shot 3-4 from three-point range. Junior guard and preseason All-Atlantic 10 selection Jacob Gilyard added 11 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists.
10 different Spiders played at least 10 minutes as Richmond went deep into its bench. "I think this is as deep as we've been in awhile," said Mooney. "I feel like we have guys who have gone into games and done things before. Tyler [Burton] is the only rookie out there. … I hope we have a chance to play a lot of guys because I do like our depth and our versatility."
The Spiders will open the 2019-20 regular season at home Friday night at 7 pm against St. Francis (PA).
