Men’s Lacrosse Announces Challenging 2020 Schedule Featuring Five NCAA Tournament Teams
12/13/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse head coach Dan Chemotti announced a challenging 2020 schedule for the Spiders Friday that features five games coming against teams ranked in the top 20 in the final lacrosse polls last season, including four teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals or better.
The home slate is headlined by a visit by NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist Maryland and NCAA Tournament participant Marist, while the road slate includes reigning NCAA Champion Virginia along with Final Four participant Duke and NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist Notre Dame.
The Spiders are two-time defending Southern Conference Tournament champions, advancing to their third NCAA Tournament in the first six years of the program's existence. Richmond finished the 2019 season ranked No. 17 in the nation after finishing the year with a 10-7 overall record and a 5-2 mark in SoCon play.
The Spiders will begin the season with two exhibition dates, playing Johns Hopkins and Marquette in Baltimore January 25 while hosting Loyola February 1.
The 2020 regular season begins at home for the first time since the 2017 season when the Spiders welcome in Maryland February 8 at Robins Stadium. The Terrapins finished last year ranked No. 6 in the country, advancing to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Virginia 13-12 in overtime. This marks the second-straight year the Spiders and Terrapins have met as Richmond traveled to College Park last season and fell 10-9 in the season opener, scoring the final five goals of the game. The season opener against Maryland will also celebrate the 100th game in the history of Spider men's lacrosse.
Richmond will charge admission for its game against Maryland, marking the second-straight year of charged admission for selected games. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased at the Richmond Ticket office and online prior to the game while also being available to buy at Robins Stadium the day of game. Pre-sale tickets go on sale Monday, January 20.
The Spiders continue their season-opening three-game home stretch February 14 hosting Marist, the defending champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Red Foxes finished last year with a 10-7 overall record and a 6-1 mark in MAAC play, falling to UMBC in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Richmond rounds out the opening stretch February 18 when it faces Navy for the first time in program history.
The Spiders hit the road for four-straight games beginning February 23 with a trip to South Bend, Ind., to meet Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish finished last season ranked No. 8 in the country, advancing to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals before falling 14-13 in overtime to Duke. The game marks the third-straight year the teams have met with the Spiders recording a 9-8 victory over then sixth-ranked Notre Dame last season – the highest ranked opponent Richmond has defeated in program history.
The Spiders continue their early season gauntlet February 29 with a trip to Durham to take on Duke from the Atlantic Coast Conference in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament contest for the Spiders. Richmond faced off against Duke last year in the tournament, scoring the final four goals of the game before falling by a 12-11 score. The Blue Devils finished the year No. 3 in the country, advancing to the Final Four before falling in overtime to eventual champion Virginia. The game is the sixth meeting all-time against Chemotti's alma mater with the Spiders owning a victory in the series in the 2016 season.
Richmond opens March with a game at Mount St. Mary's March 3 before opening Southern Conference play on the road at VMI March 7. The Spiders host Bellarmine March 14 in their SoCon home opener before facing off against rival High Point March 21. The Panthers won the SoCon regular season title last year and finished No. 15 in the country but the Spiders defeated HPU in the SoCon Tournament Championship game on its field ending their season.
The Spiders final non-conference game of the year comes March 28 when they face off against defending national champion Virginia in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers finished No. 1 in the country last season and this season's game marks the seventh meeting all-time between the teams as they have faced every year of the Spiders' program existence.
Richmond goes back into league play April 4 at Mercer before hosting Jacksonville April 11. After a trip to Furman April 18, the Spiders close out the regular season at home at Robins Stadium hosting Air Force April 25. The Spiders ended the Falcons' season last year with 7-6 victory in the SoCon Tournament semifinals.
