Swimming and Diving Closes 2019 at George Washington

WASHINGTON D.C. – Richmond swimming and diving finished the 2019 year with a dual meet at George Washington Saturday morning. The Colonials, picked second in the league in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, defeated Richmond by a 173-123 mark. The Spiders earned eight top finishes in the 16-event matchup.
Sophomore Maggie Purcell (Southampton, N.Y.) continued her stellar season Saturday. She tallied a trio of first place finishes, taking first and the team's season-best time in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:53.76. She earned a first place finish in the 500 freestyle in her first time swimming in that event this season. Purcell earned a 5:08.10 time for the top spot in that event before going on to take first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.11.
Senior Hannah Gouger (Cockeysville, Md.) earned a pair of first-place finishes. She swept the backstroke events, taking first in the 100-backstroke with a time of 56.88, and the 200-backstroke at 2:03.68.
Others taking home first-place finishes include freshman Claire O'Shaughnessy (Laurel, Md.), Emma Yeakley (Cornelius, N.C.) and Alex Beran (Basking Ridge, N.J.). O'Shaughnessy tallied the first-place finish in the 200-butterfly with a 2:09.81 time. Yeakley and Beran earned their first-place finishes on the diving board as Yeakley was first with a personal-best score of 234.45 in the 1-meter event. Beran and Yeakley both set personal bests in the 3-meter event as Beran finished first at 257.10, and Yeakley in second at 246.75.
Richmond earned a pair of individual second and third place finishes. In the 50-freestyle, Lauren Medlin (Cary, N.C.) earned the third-place spot with a time of 24.71. Eliza Manning (Frederick County, Md.) and O'Shaughnessy earned second-place finishes in the 100-freestyle (53.91) and the 100-butterfly (58.31), respectively. Ellie Ronan (Marblehead, Mass.) added a third-place finish in the 100-butterfly, finishing with a season-best time of 58.93.
The Spiders earned a pair of second-place finishes in the relays. The 200-medley relay team of Jordan Kohut (Raleigh, N.C.), Purcell, Ronan and Medlin finished at 1:47.29, while the 200-freestyle relay of Kohut, Gouger, Manning and Medlin were second with a 1:38.72 time.
The Spiders will take a break during the upcoming weeks as they won't return to the pool until January 10-11 for a two-day meet with the James Madison Dukes in Harrisonburg.
