RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) has been awarded the 2019 Black and Bold leadership award being presented on Friday, Feb. 15, by Diversity Richmond on the campus at Virginia Union University.
Diversity Richmond, the LGBTQ community center of Central Virginia, is celebrating the contributions of LGBTQ African-Americans with their third annual celebration that recognizes the leadership of black LGBTQ Virginians. Hinds-Clarke is one of nine people who will be honored at Diversity Richmond's Black and Bold awards, held on Friday.
The event will be held at Virginia Union University for the first time ever. Hinds-Clarke has been active in the Richmond community since stepping foot on campus in 2016. She is receiving the leadership award for creating empowering spaces where gay students of color can share their experience in navigating the intersections of race and gay identities. Hinds-Clarke had the privilege of doing an internship with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities this past summer and has used those experiences to make a powerful impact on the community. She is the co-founder and co-President of the University of Richmond's "Shades of Pride" affinity group and is the LGBTQ Campus Life Events and Program Coordinator at UR.
Hinds-Clarke also has attended an NCAA diversity conference and implemented those lessons back to her campus community. She also is a role model to equality in sports in her work as a Youth Summer Basketball camp coach at the University of Richmond.
Hinds-Clarke will graduate in May 2020 with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Sociology and Leadership with a minor in women, gender, and sexuality studies.
The award presentation will start at 8 p.m. at the Virginia Union University's Claude G. Perkins Living and Learning Center.
