Late-Game Heroics By Golden, Gustavson Secure Win For Spiders
02/20/2019 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Grant Golden's elbow jumper with 20 seconds in regulation and Andre Gustavson's suffocating man-to-man defense on Fordham's final possession allowed the Spiders to narrowly escape with a 72-69 win over the Rams Wednesday night at the Robins center.
In a game they neither started nor finished well, Richmond outscored Fordham 49-20 over the final 13 minutes of the first half and the first six minutes of the second half, enough to allow the Spiders to secure their fourth win in their last six games and their third straight at home.
Fordham jumped out to a 15-4 lead in the game's first seven minutes, but the Spiders tied the game at 23 with five minutes to go before halftime and stormed into the locker room on a 15-0 run to take a 38-26 lead at the break. Richmond finished the half shooting 47 percent from the field with 21 points from beyond the arc (7-14).
The Spiders didn't let up in the opening minutes of the second half, extending their lead to as many as 18. The Rams stormed back to cut the lead to single digits midway through the half and erased the deficit entirely with a 13-0 run to tie the game at 65 with 2:54 to play.
After switching defenses throughout the game, Fordham settled into a zone late, mostly keeping the Spiders out of the paint. Grant Golden's jumper from outside the lane regained the lead for Richmond with 2:31 to go, and his free throw made the advantage 68-67 with less than two minutes to play.
A layup by Jesse Bunting gave Fordham a 69-68 lead with 38 seconds remaining, the Rams first lead since the 3:05 mark of the first half.
On the ensuing possession, Golden found space from the right elbow and nailed a jumpshot to put the Spiders back in the lead at 70-69.
Fordham tried to isolate guard Nick Honor at the top of the key, but Gustavson found his way around a screen to force Honor off the three-point line, making him settle for a 25-footer that clanged off the side of the rim. The Rams gathered the rebound but traveled, turning the ball back over the Spiders.
Jake Wojcik got open enough to receive the inbounds pass and was fouled, making a pair of free throws to seal the 72-69 win.
Golden led the Spiders with 16 points, while Gustavson had a career-high 13 points and Jacob Gilyard finished with 10 along with eight rebounds and eight assists.
The Spiders return to action on Saturday when they travel to Philadelphia to face off with La Salle. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
