16th-Ranked Men’s Lacrosse Drops Hard-Fought Game To No. 6 Duke In Downpour
03/01/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The 16th-ranked University of Richmond men's lacrosse program suffered its first home loss since 2017 as the Spiders dropped an 11-7 contest to No. 6 Duke Friday night at Robins Stadium in a torrential downpour. The loss snapped the Spiders' 11-game home winning streak that dated back to May of 2017 (Air Force) and was just Richmond's second loss overall on the year, both to teams ranked in the Top 10 (No. 3 Maryland).
Senior attack Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) led the way offensively with three goals and one assist, moving into a tie for the all-time Richmond goal scoring record with former Spider and current assistant coach Mitch Goldberg. Hatfield is tied with Goldberg with 99 career goals and is already the school's all-time leader in assists (76) and points (175).
Sophomore attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) was held without a goal for the first time this season after scoring 17 goals in the first four games. Lanchbury had scored at least three goals in each of the Spiders' games this season but was held off the scoreboard by the Blue Devils despite notching a team-high seven shots while adding two assists. Junior midfielder Tyler Shoults (Summerfield, N.C.) added a pair of goals and an assist as the only other Spider with more than one goal.
Duke, the 2018 NCAA Finalist, improved to 4-1 on the season as it out-shot the Spiders by a 44-30 margin, including 29 shots in the second half. Joe Robertson and Brad smith each scored three goals in the victory for the Blue Devils who improved to 3-1 all-time against the Spiders.
Richmond couldn't script a better start to the game, scoring the first three goals in the opening three minutes, including the game's opening goal just seven seconds into the contest. Senior Nick D'Amaro (Manorville, N.Y.) won the opening faceoff and came down and scored on the game's first shot.
The Spiders kept the pressure on as Tyler Shoults scored 59 seconds later and Michael Reale (Westport, Conn.) made it a 3-0 game just 2:18 into the game, forcing Duke to switch out their goalie. The move settled the Blue Devils down and Duke scored the last three goals of the first quarter and four-straight taking a 4-3 lead 10:09 into the second quarter. Shoults knotted the game in the closing second of the first half, scoring his second of the game with 12 ticks left on the clock as the game was tied 4-4 at halftime.
The third proved to be an offensive quarter as seven combined goals were scored. Hatfield gave the Spiders the 5-4 lead with his first of the game before Robertson tied it once again. Hatfield added his second to make it a 6-5 contest at the 8:30 mark but Duke scored three-straight in a span of 1:36 taking an 8-6 lead. Hatfield notched his hat trick with a goal at the 2:56 mark, pulling the Spiders back within one at 8-7 heading into the fourth. Duke scored three unanswered goals in the fourth, taking home an 11-7 victory.
Junior defender Sean Menges (Richmond, Va.) led the Spiders on defense with five forced turnovers while junior Jack Cook (Mechanicsville, Va.) had a team-high four ground balls. Redshirt sophomore goalie Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) posted 11 saves in the loss for the Spiders.
Richmond continues its six-game home stretch Tuesday afternoon when the Spiders welcome in Mount St. Mary's. Face off is set for 4 p.m. at Robins Stadium and admission is free.
