Freshmen Lead Spiders At Day One Of Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate
03/11/2019 | Women's Golf
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A pair of freshmen have the Spiders near the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes to play at the Bucknell Spring Break Intercollegiate. Emily Ward and Naomi Mitchell both shot 75 (+3) in Monday's opening round as Richmond compiled a team score of 306 (+18), just three shots behind tournament leader Appalachian State.Â
"It was a fantastic day for our freshmen. Naomi played 16 holes at even par and Emily had an eagle and made nothing worse than a bogey all day," said coach Ali Wright. "The team is excited to get back out on the course tomorrow morning and get the win."
Mitchell and Ward are both tied for third among the 34 golfers in the field. Ward's 75 was her second-lowest round of the season, trailing only an even-par 72 in the first round of last year's Pinehurst Intercollegiate. Senior Annie Collom is also in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard in a tie for ninth after a 77 (+5).
Appalachian State (+15) and Richmond (+18) have broken away from the six-team field. Quinnipiac and Akron are tied for third at +31. The Spiders will resume chasing their first tournament title of the season on Tuesday, with a shotgun start scheduled for 7:30 AM on the Watson Course at Reunion Resort and Golf Club.Â
