03/16/2019 | Women's Lacrosse
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova tied the game with no time left to force overtime, but junior Madison Ostrick's goal with 16 seconds remaining in the first sudden-victory period was enough to give the Spiders a 14-13 win on the road on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Spiders round out nonconference play with a 7-1 record for the best start in program history.
Neither team managed to pull away in the first half, as the largest lead for either squad was just two. The Wildcats opened the scoring in the second minute of play, but Katie Sciandra capitalized from free position two minutes later to even the score.
Mia Castagnero scored her first of the day, also from free position, to give the Spiders their first lead of the day, but Villanova tallied two-straight goals in 23 seconds to retake the lead. Marissa Brown got on the board with an unassisted tally to tie the game once again, before the hosts scored again to take a 4-3 advantage eight minutes into the game.
The Spider attack continued to pressure the Wildcats, as Richmond outscored Villanova 4-2 over the remainder of the half to take a 7-6 lead into the break. Sciandra and Sam Geiersbach each scored once, and Castagnero added two more goals to log the first-half hat trick.
Geiersbach started the scoring in the second half with two-straight goals, tallying the hat trick and giving the Spiders a 9-6 lead. After the Wildcats scored to cut the lead to two, Brown ran right through the defense to score her second goal of the day and put the Spiders into double digits with 10 goals.
Back-and-forth play continued, as Villanova scored from free position before Sciandra became the third Spider to log a hat trick on the afternoon and gave the Spiders an 11-8 advantage with 12:23 to play. The Wildcats scored again, but once again Sciandra answered for her fourth goal of the day.
Villanova kept the pressure on, scoring the next two goals to cut the Spider lead to one with just over three minutes to play. After the Wildcats won the ensuing draw, the Spiders forced a turnover and cleared the ball with 1:53 left in the game.
Castagnero scored her fourth goal of the day with 1:07 to play to give the Spiders some breathing room, but Villanova scored their own goal with 27 seconds remaining to make it a 13-12 Spider lead and then tied the game at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
Redshirt sophomore Maddie Finnen won the draw coming out of the huddle, and Sciandra had a chance to win it from free position but the Villanova goalkeeper stood strong with the save. The game-winner came with just 16 seconds remaining, as the Spiders forced a turnover in the defensive end and Ostrick scored from free position for the 14-13 victory.
Megan Ginaforte finished with eight saves on the day in goal, while Finnen and Ostrick both finished with three draw control wins to lead the Spiders. Gianforte also collected four ground balls, while Julie Ball caused a game-high two turnovers.
The Spiders are now set to start Atlantic 10 play on Friday, March 22, when they travel to face George Mason. Game time in Fairfax, Va., is set for 4 p.m.
