UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- The NCAA will not grant Spiders graduate student Noah Yates's appeal for an extension of his athletic eligibility, Richmond Athletics announced on Thursday. Although Yates won't be eligible to play basketball next season, he will continue his pursuit of an MBA in finance from the Robins School of Business.
"We're disappointed that we won't have Noah on our team next year," said head coach Chris Mooney. "Despite his short time with the Spiders, he made a tremendous impact on our program and I want to thank him for being a great player and teammate last season. I'm really glad that he's decided to continue his studies here and will leave Richmond with an MBA from one of the best business schools in the nation."
Yates averaged 3.8 points and 2.4 rebounds in 33 games for the Spiders this season. He made 31 three-point field goals, third most on the team. Earlier this month, Yates became the first Spider to be named to the Atlantic 10's All-Academic Team since 2007.
"I was really looking forward to being a part of this team next season," said Yates. "Although I'm disappointed, I want to thank all of my teammates and coaches for welcoming me to Richmond last year and allowing me to be a part of the Spiders. I'm looking forward to continuing work towards my Master's degree and I'm excited to be on campus for what I think will be a great year for the program."
Yates graduated from Yale with a degree in economics last May after playing on the Bulldogs basketball team for his final two seasons. He spent his first two years at Yale as a member of the football team.
Yates joins seniors Julius Johnson and Keith Oddo as those leaving the Spiders this offseason. Richmond will return each of its top six scorers in 2019-20.
