Spiders Late Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short In A-10 First Round Loss At Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team made a huge comeback in the fourth quarter but fell just short 58-49 on the road against sixth-seeded Saint Louis Tuesday night in the Atlantic 10 Tournament first round at Chaifetz arena.
Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) led the team with 13 points off 6-for-15 shooting. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J) added nine points and six rebounds in the loss. Hinds-Clarke now has over 500 career rebounds in just three seasons.
Richmond finishes the 2018-19 season with a 9-21 overall record. Saint Louis advances to the quarterfinals on Friday, March 8, against host team Duquesne. The Billikens improved to 15-15 on the season.
The Spiders made a big run in the fourth quarter outscoring Saint Louis, 19-10, but a six-point third quarter proved to be the difference in the A-10 first round tournament game.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond was trailing 48-30 before a 15-2 run over six minutes got the game to 50-45 with 3:22 left. Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) drilled a three-pointer to give Richmond life at 50-45. Saint Louis answered with a three-pointer from senior guard Jordyn Frantz but freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) followed with a corner three to cut the lead to five points again at 53-48.
With 1:58 remaining, senior Kerri McMahan hit a jumper to push the advantage back to seven points at 55-48. Richmond only scored one point the rest of the way as Saint Louis survived a late push.
Richmond was outrebounded 41-27 and gave up 13 offensive rebounds to the Billikens. Freshman center Brooke Flowers finished with 14 points and 15 rebounds for Saint Louis.
Richmond only trailed by five points after two quarters at Saint Louis. Holt led the team with nine points off 4-for-9 shooting. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added six points and dished out two assists.
The Spiders opened the game with back-to-back baskets from Holt to take a 4-0 lead two minutes in. The Billikens tied the game at 4-4 off a layup from Brooke Flowers. Parson gave Richmond an 8-4 lead after making two-straight jumpers.
Richmond forced a time out from Saint Louis after a 6-0 run capped off by a jumper from Carpenter. Saint Louis got within three points after a three-pointer by Chloe Rice made the score 14-11 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Billikens scored nine points in a row to open up a 20-14 lead. Holt ended the run with a layup and junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 22-19.
Saint Louis led 29-21 with 1:50 remaining in the quarter but Holt drained a three-pointer to kept the Spiders close at 29-24 at the half.
Richmond closes the book on the 2018-19 season and will return 14 of its 15 players next season.
