03/09/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team opened Southern Conference play with a bang Saturday afternoon as the Spiders matched their season-high in goals with a dominating 17-4 victory over visiting VMI at Robins Stadium. The victory improved the 14th-ranked Spiders to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in league play while VMI falls to 3-2 on the year and 0-1 in SoCon action.
Senior attack Teddy Hatfield (Summit, N.J.) led eight different Spider scorers in the victory. Hatfield, who became Richmond's all-time leading goal scorer last time out, added to his career record with five goals in the victory, all coming in the first three quarters. Hatfield's five goals are tied for second all-time in Richmond history in a single-game, matching the top marks this season set by sophomore Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario). He now has 105 career goals scored for the Spiders, adding to his program record.
Lanchbury had himself a strong game as well, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists for a team-high six points. Lanchbury now has 20 goals this season to lead the Spiders, two ahead of Hatfield's 18 on the year. Junior attack Kevin Todd (Collegeville, Pa.) posted his first career hat trick and scoring his first three career goals in the victory, making his second start this year.
Freshman Jack Delligatti (Summerfield, N.C.) added the first two goals of his career in the second half while seniors Nathan Emery (Burlington, Ontario) and Pierce Dellafera (Locust Valley, N.Y.) each added their first goal of the season.
Richmond came out of the gate quickly, scoring three goals in the opening 5:12 of the game and opening up to a 12-0 lead into the third quarter. The Spiders scored five goals in each of the first and second quarters, owning a 10-0 lead at halftime, their largest halftime lead of the year.
Senior Tyler Shoults (Warners, N.Y.) opened the scoring just 2:10 into the game and Todd scored his first of the year 30 seconds later. Hatfield would add two goals in the opening quarter before notching his third in the second. The Spiders continued to extend the lead as Lanchbury notched his hat trick early in the third and Todd had his in the fourth. VMI would score three goals in the fourth quarter as the Spiders used three different goalies.
Redshirt sophomore Jack Rusbuldt (Richmond, Va.) played 45 minutes in goal and allowed just one goal while making 10 saves. VMI starting goalie Benjamin Stump played the first 51:58 for the Keydets and allowed 15 goals while making 15 saves.
Richmond closes out its six-game home stretch next weekend when the Spiders host Furman at Robins Stadium. Face-off is set for 1 p.m.
