Schmidt Named the Atlantic 10's Player of the Week
04/22/2019 | Baseball
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior catcher Kyle Schmidt (Smithville, Texas) was named the Atlantic 10's Player of the Week following a week of competitions filled will highlights for the fourth-year letter winner. This is Schmidt's first A-10 Player of the Week award in his career, and Richmond's fifth such award this season. Schmidt joins the group of Tyler Plantier (Poway, Calif.), D.J. Lee (Frankfort, Ill.) and Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa.) as previous winners of the weekly award. The Spiders now won back-to-back Player of the Week awards for the second time this season.
Schmidt led the Spiders to a 2-2 week, with a series win over the A-10 leading VCU Rams. Schmidt was a mainstay behind the plate, catching 37 of the 40 innings in four games last week. He finished the week with a .368 average, going 7-for-19. Four of Schmidt's hits were for extra bases as he drove in seven runs throughout the week. He drove in multiple runs against VMI and the first game of the VCU series and scored at least one run in all four games.
Schmidt started the week going 2-for-6 with three RBI, a double, a home run and scored once in the 11-inning loss to VMI. He continued his hot hitting into the weekend, going 2-for-5 in the opener against VCU and hit the game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth in the series opener. In the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader, Schmidt went deep again, hitting his third home run of the week, fourth of the season. Schmidt also scored the game-winning run in Sunday's finale with the Rams, sliding in in front of the VCU pitcher to give the Spiders the series.
Defensively, he continued his superb play, throwing out a couple of runners on the bases. Against VMI, the catcher blocked a wild pitch, picked up the ball and made a diving tag for the putout at home. He followed that play by blocking another pitch in the dirt and throwing out a runner trying to take second to retire the side. He did not allow a passed ball throughout the weekend.
Behind Schmidt's efforts, Richmond took the series with the cross-town rivals for the second straight season. The Spiders played in two extra inning games last week, and have played in six extra inning games this year.
Schmidt and the Spiders are back at home Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host the William and Mary Tribe at Pitt Field.
