ORLANDO, Fla. – For the second straight day, the Richmond Spiders men's golf team worked to dig itself out of a hole of its own making. Richmond completed Sunday's third and final round of the A-10 Championship with a team score of 286 (-2), the Spiders second straight round under par after opening the tournament with a 29-over par round of 317 on Friday. Richmond move up three spots on the leaderboard Sunday to finish the tournament fifth in the 11-team field at 888 (+24).
The Spiders top individual finisher was junior Andrew Sciarretta at 220 (+4), tied for 10th in the 55-man field. It was Sciarretta's second career top-10 finish as well as his second top-10 at an A-10 Championship. He finished tied for second at the 2017 conference tournament as a freshman.
"I think there's a little bit of extra motivation at a conference tournament because in the back of your mind you know it could be your final time together as a team," said Sciaretta. "We've worked so hard together all year there is a real desire to sure we end the season on a high note."
In his final collegiate tournament, senior Ben Wanichek tied for 17th at 221 (+5) after shooting a one-under par 71 Sunday. In a post-tournament awards ceremony, Wanichek was named a First-Team All-Atlantic 10 selection for his 2018-19 season, the first all-conference honor of his career.
Sophomore Michael Baker also finished tied for 17th after shooting a two-under 70 in round three, Richmond's low round on the day. Baker carded four birdies to offset a pair of bogeys on Sunday.
Junior Zack Justice finished in a tie for 31st place at 229 (+13) after shooting 75 (+3) in the third round. Freshman Michael Childress bounced back from rounds of 83 and 81 in rounds one and two to shoot an even-par 72 on Sunday. He finished 46th.
The Spiders climb up the leaderboard on Sunday ensures that coach Adam Decker's streak of finishing fifth or better in the A-10 remains intact. Richmond has now finished in the top five in the Atlantic 10 in each of Decker's 14 seasons at the school.
