04/05/2019 | Women's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – Sam Geiersbach tallied five points on a hat trick and two assists and Marissa Brown finished with four second-half assists to lead the Spiders to a 14-8 win over VCU at a rain-soaked Cary Street Field on Friday afternoon.
Â
Seven different Spiders scored in the win, with Geiersbach and Katie Sciandra each logging hat tricks and Mia Castagnero, Madison Ostrick and Jillian Becker scoring a pair of goals each. Castagnero's first goal of the game was also the 100th of her career, making her the third Spider this season to reach the milestone.
Â
Ostrick started the scoring just 42 seconds into the game, and Castagnero and Geiersbach each followed with goals of their own to give the Spiders a quick 3-0 advantage. VCU cut into the lead with their first goal with 24 minutes to play in the first half before both teams went on a 10-minute scoring drought.
Â
VCU managed to break the scoreless streak first, but goals from Becker and Sciandra made it 5-2 with 11:40 to play in the half. VCU managed two more goals in the final minutes while Sciandra scored her second goal to make the score 6-4 at the break.
Â
Richmond opened the second half with another three-goal outburst, as two goals from Geiersbach and one from Evelyn Roberts all occurred in less than a minute to make it 9-4 with 24:39 remaining. Two of the goals were assisted by Brown.
Â
VCU cut the lead to four before Becker rebounded with her second goal off another assist from Brown. The Rams scored twice more to make the game interesting, but Lauren Kingsbury killed the VCU momentum by intercepting a pass on the clear and running all the way in for a goal and an 11-7 lead.
Â
Though the Rams managed another goal, the Spiders finished the game the way they started both halves, with a three-goal run, as Sciandra, Ostrick and Castagnero scored for the 14-8 win.
Â
The Spiders dominated the Rams in shots, 41-20, while also winning the draw, 16-9. Julia Schmuckler won a game-high four draw controls, and Ostrick, Brown and Julie Ball all won three.
Â
Ball also led the Spiders with five caused turnovers to tie her career high, while she and Ostrick collected a game-high four ground balls each. Richmond won the ground ball battle, 24-12, and forced the Rams in 27 turnovers.
Â
The Spiders stay on the road for a morning matchup at La Salle on Sunday, April 7. Game time in Philadelphia is set for 11 a.m.
