BEALSVILLE, Md. – The Spider fired a blistering 296 (+8) in the second round of the Hoya Invitational Monday afternoon at Four Streams golf course to vault into a tie for second place at the event with 18 holes remaining. The Spiders second-round score was their lowest since carding rounds of 287 and 295 on their home course at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va. in a 36-hole match vs Columbia last October.
Richmond's 36-hole total of 608 (+32) is tied with Ball State for second in the eight-team field. Georgetown leads the event with a score of 592 (+16).
Senior Annie Collom led the Spiders in the second round with a three-under 69, tied for the fourth-lowest score in program history. Collom is tied for third in the field of 46 at 146 (+2) after shooting a 77 (+5) in the first round Monday morning. She shaved eight shots off her total Monday afternoon.
"Putting was the biggest difference," said Collom. "I was playing too much break in the first round and I started just aiming inside the hole or at the hole and they started going in."
Collom's 69 trails only her own 67 (-5) vs Columbia last fall and a pair of 68s (-4) by Isabella Rusher (Bill Berg Invitational) and Elsa Diaz (Boston College Intercollegiate) in 2017-18 in the Spiders record books.
Fellow senior Sophie DiPetrillo is also in the top 10. She stands tied for eighth at 150 (+6) after rounds of 76 and 74 on Monday.
The event will conclude with 18 holes on Tuesday. The final round will start with a shotgun start at 9:00 AM.
"I'm excited to play tomorrow," said Collom. "I love this golf course and I'm glad I get to give it another shot on Tuesday."
