06/17/2019 | Women's Lacrosse
Incoming University of Richmond women's lacrosse rookie Sophia DiCenso will already have high-level international experience when she arrives on campus in the fall.
Â
DiCenso is one of 18 players named to the U.S. U19 National Team final roster that will compete at the World Lacrosse Women's U19 Championship in Peterborough, Ontario, in August following an extensive selection process that began in August 2018.
Â
She is the first Spider to be named to the U19 National team since Bria (Eulitt) Irizarry, current Duke assistant coach and a 2011 Richmond graduate.
Â
Over 500 applications were received for this year's team, while over 100 athletes took part in the tryout process. DiCenso, who will compete in her first collegiate season with the Spiders in Spring 2020, is one of five U19 team members from a non-ACC or Big 10 program. She is also one of just six members of the team set to graduate college in 2023 or later.
Â
DiCenso has tallied 242 goals and 103 assists as a four-year varsity starter at Foxboro High, and will look to lead her team in the Division 2 State semifinals on Tuesday, June 17. A 2018 and 2019 High School All-American, she will also compete in the 2019 Under Armour Senior All-America Game at the end of June before turning her focus to the World Championship.
Â
Following additional training opportunities in July, the U.S. team will face off with Australia on August 2 in its first game of the World Lacrosse Women's U19 Championship, which runs from August 1-10. DiCenso and her teammates will look to win gold for the first time since 2011 after the squad fell to Canada in the gold medal game in 2015.
