ATHENS, Ohio – University of Richmond freshman Noah Campbell placed fourth overall in the 2019 Collegiate Trail Running National Championships in Athens, Ohio, held within the Thunderbunny 12K in Strouds Run State Park, Campbell capped a successful year earning Collegiate Running Association All-America honors with his top-5 finish.(link: https://www.collegiaterunning.org/all-america).
Runners were greeted with sunny skies and morning temperatures in the low 50's at the Thunderbunny Trail Race 12K. Despite muddy trails due to recent rain, college runners from as far away as Ashland, Oregon, came ready to attack the course. And attack, they did.
From the start it was clear the course record of 57:19 would be in jeopardy as the top ranked college runners separated themselves from the pack early on. After covering the opening mile at 4:50 mile pace on a road before turning to single track trail, Daniel Jaskowak (Virginia Tech) led slightly over Joshua Park (Ohio University), followed by Campbell, Anthony Raftis (Queens University), Colin Lamb (University of Dayton) and David Magda (Davis & Elkins) in close pursuit. While on the six-mile single track Thunderbunny Trail, Jaskowak and Park gradually pulled away, while the top-six men all continued to run under course record pace.
After 7 miles of aggressive racing, Jaskowak and Park emerged from the trails together, with Jaskowak taking the win with a time of 44:11 over Park's 44:12 as both crushed the previous 2017 course record of 57:19 held by Tim Myers, and earned them $750 and $500 respectively. Raftis (45:23) claimed 3rd with Campbell (46:49) in 4th as the top 10 finishers all broke the previous course record.
During his freshman year Campbell represented the U.S. in the 2018 Youth Sky Running World Championships in Fonte Cerreto, L'Aquila, Italy and ran a personal best of 25:12 in the 2018 Richmond 8K road race earning a top 20 finish out of 3,000 runners. He also finished 9th in the 2019 Collegiate 10K Road Race National Championships within the Ukrops Monument Avenue 10K in Richmond, Virginia on April 13th
