RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) has been named Second Team All-State by the association of Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the organization announced on Thursday. Fernandez earns his first All-State award after a solid season playing No. 1 singles for the Spiders.
Fernandez was named First Team All-Atlantic 10 after a 12-11 record playing at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Richmond native played 13 matches at No. 1 singles going 6-7. He earned a clutch straight-sets win against Davidson's Axel Fries to help Richmond advance to the A-10 Championship match. Fernandez paired with teammate Josh Keitelman at No. 1 doubles going 12-9 on the season.
The Spiders finished 2019 with an 18-6 overall record, the second most wins since a school record 25 wins in 2017. Richmond earned a No. 2 seed in the A-10 Tournament and made a run to the championship match after defeating Fordham (W, 4-1) and Davidson (W, 4-0). The Spiders fell in the championship to crosstown rival VCU, 4-0, but will return their entire top six players for next season.
