Men’s Lacrosse Names John Hogan Assistant Coach
06/28/2019 | Men's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse head coach Dan Chemotti announced the addition of John Hogan to the Spiders' staff as an assistant coach. Hogan joins the Spiders after spending two seasons with Penn State and having a stellar playing career at Cornell.
"We are ecstatic about the addition of John Hogan to our staff here at Richmond," Chemotti said. "John and the programs he has been a part of as a coach or player, at every level, have always been synonymous with winning and that's no coincidence. Most notably this past 2019 season with Penn State. He has a great mind for the game, he is the consummate professional and he has an outstanding work ethic. He fits the Richmond Lacrosse culture perfectly and therefore will make a significant and immediate impact on our program."
Hogan spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn State, helping the Nittany Lions to a 16-2 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals this year. Penn State finished first in the nation in won-loss percentage (88.9) and was the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
"I couldn't be more excited to join the Richmond men's lacrosse program," Hogan said. "I want to thank Coach Tambroni and the Penn State program for everything the past two years. I am excited to join coach Chemotti and reunite with coach Richards on the staff. I am very thankful to them for this fantastic opportunity. Getting to know the program more in depth during this process has been a great experience and I can't wait to help this program in any way that I can."
Hogan worked closely with the Nittany Lion offense, face-off position and man-up offense during the year. He helped Penn State turn in the nation's top-scoring offense, averaging 17.94 goals per game – more than two goals better than any other team in the country. The Nittany Lion man-up offensive was also the top unit in the nation, converting on 61.3 percent of its attempts (38-of-62).
Hogan helped Penn State finish ninth in the nation in face-off won percentage at 58.4 (337-of-577). He worked with Gerard Arceri, helping him finish 15th in the nation at the spot, converting 278-of-456 (60.98%). Arceri was a Tewaaraton Award Nominee and was named the Big Ten Specialist of the Year while earning Third Team All-America accolades.
Hogan starred at Cornell in the Ivy League, earning four letters from 2012-15 – including the first two years when Richmond assistant coach Paul Richards was on the staff at Cornell. He finished his career playing in 53 games for the Big Red, scoring 47 goals and handing out 45 assists, good for 92 career points. He was a two-team All-Ivy League selection and led the Big Red to three consecutive Ivy League championships from 2013 to 2015. He scored 19 goals and added 21 assists as a senior while posting 17 goals and 23 assists as a junior. He was named the 2015 recipient of the J.E.B. Sportsmanship Award.
Hogan also spent time coaching after his playing career ended with stints at St. Ignatius College Prep, NXT Lacrosse and the Annapolis Hawks. He graduated from Cornell in 2015 with a degree in industrial and labor relations.
