University of Richmond women's lacrosse incoming freshman Sophia DiCenso is bringing home the hardware before her Spider career even begins.
Â
A member of the U.S. U19 National Team, DiCenso and Team USA took home the gold medal at the 2019 World Lacrosse Women's U19 World Championship, going 7-0 overall and taking down defending champion Team Canada 13-3 for the title on Saturday afternoon in Peterborough, Ontario.
Â
The World Championship title marks the first since 2011 and fifth overall for Team USA, which dominated through the tournament, outscoring its opponents 128-20 through seven games.
Â
DiCenso proved to be a dominant force in the midfield, tallying seven goals and an assist through the tournament. She capped off an impressive performance with five draw controls, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
Â
"My time with Team USA has been an amazing experience," DiCenso said following Saturday's championship win. "Playing with this team has helped me learn and grow as a player and a person. I have built friendships that will last a lifetime with people from all over the world."
Â
DiCenso will now return to the States for her rookie campaign at Richmond, and will use the experience she gained at the U19 World Championship to help the Spiders in their quest for a third-straight Atlantic 10 title in the 2020 season.
Â
"I am counting down the days until I set foot on campus," she added. "I'm looking forward to meeting my new teammates and being a part of the tradition of great lacrosse at Richmond."
