08/20/2019 | Field Hockey, General, Spider Athletic Fund
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey program is set to reach a major milestone in 2019 as the Spiders compete in the program's 100th season.
Â
The program's first competition, and subsequently the first intercollegiate field hockey game in the state of Virginia, took place between then-Westhampton College and Sweet Briar College in 1919. Since the start of the program, the Spiders have compiled a 592-570-72 record with over 900 student-athletes competing.
Â
The Spiders have seen unprecedented success since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2001, boasting a 101-24 record in conference play and winning eight A-10 Tournament titles and nine A-10 Regular Season crowns. The Spiders have also made eight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Â
The Spiders will commemorate the occasion with a celebration for alumnae and friends of the program, which will take place over Family Weekend (October 5-6). Program alumnae will be recognized at halftime of the Spiders' game against instate rival James Madison, which is set for Sunday, October 6 at 12 p.m.
