COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Richmond field hockey team tied things up with No. 2 and reigning NCAA finalist Maryland in the first quarter of play, but the Terrapins went on a four-goal run through the remainder of the game to take a 5-1 season-opening win on Friday night in College Park.
Â
The Terps started the scoring in the third minute of play off of a penalty corner, but sophomore Addie Nash and the Spiders responded just over three minutes later, as Nash collected the ball in front of the cage and sent it past the Maryland keeper to tie the score at 1-1.
Â
Maryland rattled off one more goal in the first period along with a pair in the second to take a 4-1 advantage into halftime. Three of the Terrapins' four first-half goals came off of penalty corners.
Â
After a scoreless third quarter, the Terps made it a 5-1 game with just over 11 minutes to play to round out the scoring.
Â
Maryland held a 20-10 edge in shots, while junior Frankie-Lynne Conklin finished with five saves in goal before being relieved by freshman Erika Latta. Nash and freshman Lindsey Frank led Richmond with two shots each.
Â
The Spiders will stay on the road and look for their first win of the season when they take on American on Sunday, September 1. Game time in Washington, D.C., is set for 1 p.m.
