Late Goal Lifts Spiders To 3-2 Win Over American
09/01/2019 | Field Hockey
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Elise Zwicklbauer's goal with under a minute to play in the fourth quarter was the difference-maker for the University of Richmond field hockey team, as the senior scored off a redirect on a penalty corner to lift the Spiders to a 3-2 road win on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Â
The win marks the Spiders' first over the Eagles since 2015, when Richmond took a 2-1 win in overtime at Crenshaw Field.
Â
After a scoreless first quarter that didn't see either team take a shot, the dynamic of the game changed quickly. The Eagles took a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner with 7:27 left in the opening half, but the Spiders responded in under a minute, as freshman Lindsey Frank collected the ball off of a rebound and found junior Abra Granger on the post to tie things up at 1-1.
Â
After the Eagles scored their second goal of the game, Richmond answered once again with a goal from Zwicklbauer, who evened the score at 2-2 with just 30 seconds to play in the first half.
Â
The Spiders held off a threatening American offense in the third quarter of play, which went scoreless despite three penalty corners and four shots in the period.
Â
American continued to pressure in the final quarter, but it was the Spiders that broke through with Zwicklbauer's second goal with 41 seconds to play off an assist from sophomore Steffie Bongers. The Eagles had an opportunity to answer with their own corner with just 13 seconds remaining, but the Spiders defense stood strong.
Â
American outshot the Spiders 14-8, but junior goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin tallied five saves in the win, including a sprawling late save in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied.
Â
The Spiders return to action on Friday, September 6, when they travel to face preseason-ranked Liberty. Game time in Lynchburg, Va. is set for 3 p.m.
