Women Take First, Men Second at Spider Alumni Open

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. – The 2019 cross country season started on a picture-perfect Saturday morning at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville. The Spiders had a terrific showing as the women took first in the five-team, two-mile race, preceded by the Spider men taking second in the six-team 5k course.
The top three finishers on the women's side were freshmen, with two being Spiders. Kate Dickow (Lititz, Pa.) won her first collegiate race, turning in a time of 11:09.2. Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.) was third, coming in at 11:19.6 in her first collegiate race. The third Spider to finish was another rookie, as Anna George (Montville, N.J.) came in sixth place at 11:31.7. Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) was next to cross the finish line at 11:35.8. Ave Grosenheider (Madison, Wis.) and Johanna Lupica (Richmond, Va.) finished 11th and 12th, coming in at 11:39.3 and 11:39.6, respectively. The time is Lupica's new personal record. Freshman Kate McAndrew (Denville, N.J.) rounded out the top 15 with a time of 11:45.3.
Miles Clikeman (North Chesterfield, Va.) paced the men, finishing in second place with a time of 15:15.2, setting a new career-best. He was followed closely by Peter Borger's (Malvern, Pa.) personal record at 15:24.3 to finish in fifth place. Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.) was the next Spider to cross the finish line, with another career-mark at 15:36.3. Patrick Sutphin (Mechanicsville, Va.), Paul Knepple (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and James Flanagan (Danville, Calif.) finished in 17th, 18th and 19th, turning in times of 15:57.8, 15:57.8 and 15:58.7, respectively. Trey Burleson (Mosely, Va.) rounded out the top finishers for the Spiders, placing 23rd with a time of 16:11.6.
