RICHMOND, Va. – Spider cross country is back in action this weekend as they make the short trip up I-95 for the George Mason Invitational at Oatlands in Leesburg, Va. Richmond is coming off of an impressive showing at the Spider Alumni Invitational, as the women took first in the two-mile race and the men were second in the 5k at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville.
Friday's event will feature the women starting with a 5k race at 4:30 p.m., with the men following with an 8k race at 5:15 p.m.
The women were led by a trio of rookies at the Alumni Open, as freshmen Kate Dickow (Lititz, Pa.), Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.) and Anna George (Montville, N.J.) were the top three Spiders to finish the two-mile race. Dickow, competing in her first-ever cross country race, ran the two-mile event in 11:09.2. She was followed quickly by Snow who finished third with a time of 11:19.6. George finished the two-mile race sixth with a time of 11:31.7.
Senior Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) and graduate student Ave Grosenheider (Madison, Wis.) will also look to score points for the Spiders after finishing seventh and 12th, respectively at the Alumni Open. Brown's career-best 5k run came at the A-10 Championships last year, when she finished the race in 17:45.7. Grosenheider career-best of 17:38.8 also came at the A-10 Championship last season.
Miles Clikeman (North Chesterfield, Va.) and Peter Borger (Malvern, Pa.) paced the Spiders in the opening meet. Clikeman finished in second in the 5k run, finishing in 15:15.2. Borger, a sophomore, finished fifth running in 15:24.3. Clikeman will look to improve upon his personal best 8k time of 24:41.7, set at Paul Short Run in 2018. Borger has a current PR of 25:23.6, also at the Paul Short Run last season.
Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.) turned in a top 10 finish at Pole Green Park, finishing the 5k race in 15:36.3. The sophomore ran his 8k PR in 2018, finishing the Paul Short Run in 27:11.7. The trio of Patrick Sutphin (Mechanicsville, Va.), Paul Knepple (Point Pleasant, N.J) and James Flanagan (Danville, Calif.) finished 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively at the Alumni Open. Sutphin's and Knepple each set their PRs at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals race in Madison last October. Flanagan has yet to compete in an 8k race at the collegiate level.
