Spiders Come Up Short at No. 20 Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team held off 20th-ranked Liberty through the majority of play after giving up an early goal, but the Flames tallied two late scores to take a 3-0 win on Friday afternoon in Lynchburg.

Liberty jumped into the lead in the second minute of play off of a scramble on front of the net, but the Spider defense didn't allow a shot through the rest of the first quarter.

The Flames had momentum in the second 15 minutes, outshooting the Spiders, 5-0, but goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin and the defense stepped up to maintain the 1-0 deficit heading into halftime. Conklin finished the half with three saves.

The Spiders stepped up the offensive pressure in the third quarter, outshooting the Flames 7-3 and earning four penalty corners, but couldn't capitalize on their chances. After five scoreless minutes to start the fourth quarter, Liberty broke out with two goals in under two minutes to make the final score 3-0.

The Flames outshot Richmond 13-9, but the Spiders held a 7-5 edge in penalty corners. Conklin finished with a career-high eight saves in goal, while eight different Spiders recorded a shot on the day.

Richmond returns to action on Sunday, September 8, when they host Bucknell in the 2019 home opener. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 3 p.m.
