Zwicklbauer’s Late Goals Send Spiders Past Lehigh, 4-2
09/13/2019 | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Elise Zwicklbauer and freshman Lindsey Frank teamed up on a pair of goals in the final quarter to give the University of Richmond field hockey team a commanding 4-2 road win over host Lehigh on Friday afternoon.
The duo connected twice in the final six minutes of play, as Frank found an open Zwicklbauer in the circle and the senior forward capitalized on both chances for her second multi-goal game of the season.
The Mountain Hawks jumped out to an early advantage with a goal just 2:30 into the game following a flurry of shots in the opening minutes, but the Spiders quickly countered, maintaining possession through the majority of the first quarter.
Senior Amanda DaSilva scored her first goal of the season and put the Spiders on the board with under a minute to play in the opening period off a penalty corner shot, tying the game at 1-1. Zwicklbauer and Cadera Smith were credited with assists on the goal.
The Spiders held the majority of possession again in the second quarter, but it was Lehigh who took the lead into the break after scoring on a penalty stroke with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Despite the first-half deficit, goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin and the Spider defense combined for eight saves through the first 30 minutes of play.
A frantic third quarter of play saw the Spiders rattle off seven shots, and with 4:50 remaining in the period senior Jessica Loos was able to knock in a high deflection off a penalty corner for her first career goal.
The Spiders kept the pressure on in the fourth quarter and were able to take the lead with Zwicklbauer's first goal with just over five minutes to play. Less than two minutes later, Frank found Zwicklbauer again to double the Spider lead with 3:39 to play and seal the team's third win of the season.
The Spiders outshot Lehigh 23-15, including 17-3 in the second half, while earning 11 penalty corners to Lehigh's three. Conklin logged a career-high nine saves in cage, while sophomore Steffie Bongers also posted a defensive save. The loss was the first for the Mountain Hawks this season.
The Spiders will face off with their final Patriot League foe of the regular season when they take on Lafayette on Sunday afternoon. Game time in Easton, Pa., is set for noon.
