Football Opens CAA Season Saturday Night Hosting No. 25 Elon

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team opens Colonial Athletic Association play Saturday night at Robins Stadium as the Spiders welcome in 25th-ranked Elon in a game presented by West Broad Honda. Game time is set for 6 p.m. between the Spiders and Phoenix.
Saturday's game will also be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington Plus and online at FloFootball.com as part of the CAA's broadcast package. The FloFootball streaming is a paid service with special pricing for CAA fans of $12.50 per month or $95.88 per year ($7.99 per month). Fans to sign up for the service by clicking HERE. Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Lane Casadonte will be on the call.

Spider fans should take note for this game. An event on Bandy Field Saturday September 14, 2019, will cause the closure of Three Chopt Road between Kensington Avenue and Honaker Road from 8 AM until 10 PM. Fans coming to campus for the football game are encouraged to use alternate routes to enter campus (River Road entrance best option). Additional police officers and detour signs will be in place to assist with accessing campus during the road closure. Traffic delays along Patterson Avenue and Three Chopt Road are expected.
Richmond enters Saturday's game with a 1-1 overall record, picking up a win against Jacksonville at home and a loss at Boston College. The Spiders have rushed for a CAA-high 535 yards through the first two games this year with six different players have rushed for 25 or more yards. Mancuso leads the team on the ground with 147 yards on 21 carries while also passing for 255 yards on 25-of-36 completions.
Elon also enters the game with a 1-1 record on the year. The Phoenix opened the season with a last-second loss to No. 21 N.C. A&T on the road before bouncing back with a victory at home against The Citadel. Jaylan Thomas leads the rushing attack with 141 yards on 32 carries while Brelynd Cyphers is second on the team with 110 yards on 17 carries. Davis Cheek has taken every snap under center for Elon and has passed for 428 yards through two games on 30-of-50 passing.
Saturday's game is the CAA opener for both teams and the Spiders' first meeting against a nationally ranked opponent this year. The 2019 season marks the 13th season for Richmond in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders are 58-41 all-time in CAA play dating back to their inaugural season in 2007. Richmond is 4-8 all-time in CAA openers and this year marks the 10th time in program history the Spiders have opened CAA play at home. Richmond is 3-6 when opening league play at home winning openers at home in 2015 (Maine), 2008 (Towson) and 2007 (UNH).
Richmond is 12-8 against nationally ranked opponents since 2015, including five wins at home at Robins Stadium. The Spiders last defeated a top-25 team in 2017 with a 22-0 victory over No. 20 Villanova on the road. Richmond's last victory over a ranked opponent at home came earlier that same season with a 41-38 victory over No. 24 Albany on a last-second field goal by former Spider Griffin Trau.
Saturday's game marks the 10th meeting all-time between Richmond and Elon, including the sixth time meeting as Colonial Athletic Association foes. The Spiders are 7-2 all-time against the Phoenix but have dropped the last two meetings after opening the series on a seven-game winning streak. Last year, the Spiders dropped a hard fought 38-28 contest at Elon. Richmond pulled within seven in the fourth quarter on two separate occasions and had the ball, but was unable to complete the rally. Quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) finished the game going 12-of-28 through the air for 215 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 46 yards on 11 carries as Richmond tallied 177 yards of rushing. Running back Aaron Dykes (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Spiders with 76 yards rushing on 12 carries, while scoring a pair of touchdowns.
