Spiders Earn Tough Road Draw At Coastal Carolina, 3-3
09/15/2019 | Women's Soccer
CONWAY, S.C. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team kept battling all day and scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute to earn a tie 3-3 on the road at Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt senior Jessica Stanfill (Fitzgerald, Ga.) made a season-high eight saves, one off her career high set last season. Redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) added two goals, including a header to tie the game in the second half off a corner kick from teammate Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.).
"Coming from behind twice on the road is a great feeling," head coach Marty Beall said. "Coastal Carolina has some excellent players that gave us problems all day. On the flip side we created numerous chances in front of their goal, which is great but should have scored three or four more. So that's a bit disappointing. We will learn from this game and continue to grow together this week."
Coastal Carolina took a 3-2 in the 54th minute as Loranna Austin scored off a run down the sideline and her shot deflected into the net.
In overtime, both teams had a couple of chances as Richmond had three corners in the extra sessions. Coastal Carolina's goalkeeper Ky Hudson, who substituted into the second overtime, made a huge save to keep the game tied off a shot from Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.).
The Spiders finished with 17 shots, nine on goal and 10 corner kicks in the game. Coastal Carolina had 19 shots and 11 on net.
In the first half, Richmond (3-2-2) fell behind in the seventh minute after Sunneva Sigurvinsdottir scored to give Coastal Carolina a 1-0 lead. The Spiders answered back as sophomore Mollly Morgan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) found a loose ball in the box and scored her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.
Walker gave Richmond a 2-1 lead after receiving a pass from Morgan and scoring in the lower left corner in the 25th minute.
Coastal Carolina answered with a game-tying goal three minutes later as Hannah Miller scored off a pass from Aminah Johnson. The Spiders finished with two corners and nine shots in the first half.
Walker leads the team with five goals in seven games to start her redshirt junior season.
The Spiders finish the non-conference season with a road game at Towson on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m.
