Richmond Drops Final Non-Conference Game At Towson
09/19/2019 | Women's Soccer
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference game 3-0 on the road at Towson Thursday night. The Tigers Jenna Blank scored all three goals, completing a hat-trick in the first half.
Richmond finished the game with 10 shots, four on goal and seven corners. Senior Brooke Beam (Dagsboro, Del.) led the team with three shots and redshirt junior Alyssa Walker (Centerville, Ohio) had two.
"Today was a tale of two halves," head coach Marty Beall said. "Unfortunately, we didn't show up with the intensity or quality needed to compete in the first half. I give a lot of credit to Towson and their staff for executing their game plan. My staff and I need to do a better job of making sure our team is ready to play."
Towson struck first as sophomore Jenna Blank scored her second goal of the season in the fourth minute. The Tigers made it 2-0 after Blank scored again off a pass from Moriah Wigley in the ninth minute.
In the 36th minute, Blank earned the hat-trick with her third goal of the game off a pass from Nikki Logan.
Richmond (3-3-2) had three corner kicks in the first half resulting in a couple of chances but none went into the back of the net. Freshman Gianna Lucchesi (Hamilton, N.J.) had a header on net but Towson keeper Lindsey Pazdziorko made the save.
Junior Katie Tritt (Fredericksburg, Va.) had her shot attempt get blocked in the 12th minute and freshman Caitlin Sutton (Clifton, Va.) also had a shot from just outside the box but was saved by Pazdziorko in the 44th minute.
In the second half, the Spiders were much more aggressive in getting opportunities offensively outshooting Towson, 5-1. Richmond just couldn't find the back of the net but created chances with four corner kicks in the second half alone.
"I'm proud of the players for raising their level of play in the second half," said Beall. "Needless to say we will need to put together a complete game on Sunday as we start conference play at UMass."
The Spiders open the A-10 portion of the schedule with a road game at UMass on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 1 p.m.
