Two Late Goals Send Spiders Past UC Davis, 2-1
09/22/2019 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Addie Nash and Sutton Orndorff each scored once in the final nine minutes of play to give the University of Richmond field hockey team a 2-1 victory over visiting UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Â
The Spiders held the Aggies – who had logged shutouts in their previous three games – to just one shot on the day, the fewest of any Richmond opponent this season.
Â
UC Davis scored early in the game off a fast break, but neither team could find offense in the first two quarters, each going into the locker room with one shot. After a scoreless third period that saw Richmond rattle off three shots, the host team continued to dominate on offense, scoring on two of their three fourth-quarter attempts.
Â
Nash's goal came off of a scramble in front of cage, as she received the ball from Jessica Hendry with 8:34 to play and finished the play to tie the game at 1-1. The Spiders used their momentum to earn a penalty corner with 5:26 to play, and Abby Lyons' shot was deflected in from the inserter Orndorff for the Spiders' first lead of the game. The goal was Orndorff's first of her career.
Â
The Spiders dominated possession throughout the game despite not scoring until the final period, outshooting the Aggies 7-1 and holding a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Â
Richmond is now 5-3 on the season and will look to move to 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play when they hit the road for a pair of conference games next weekend. The Spiders will take on Lock Haven first on Friday, September 27, at 3 p.m. before traveling to Amherst, Mass. to face UMass on Sunday.
