Cross Country Heads to Charlottesville for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational
09/26/2019 | Cross Country
RICHMOND, Va. – After a week off, the Richmond cross country team will hit a new course this weekend, heading to Charlottesville for the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia. This will be the third race of the season for Richmond. In the first two races, the women took first as a team in both, and individually, Miles Clikeman (North Chesterfield, Va.) took home the title at the Mason Invitational on the men's side.
The event will start with the men's competition, an 8-kilometer race at 9:30 a.m. The women will run a 6-kilometer race afterwards, beginning at 10:15 a.m. The men will be running the 8k race for the second-straight meet, while this will be the first time this season the women will run a 6k.
Spider rookies have been the feature on the women's side as three freshmen finished in the top 10 of the first race and scored points at the Mason Invitational. Kate Dickow (Lititz, Pa.) took first in the first race of the season and followed that with a third-place finish in her first 5k at the Oatlands two weeks ago. She's twice been named the Atlantic 10's Women's Rookie Performer of the Week for her performances.
Freshmen Anna George (Montville, N.J.) and Lily Snow (Richmond, Va.) finished 12th and 17th at the Mason invitational, respectively. George placed sixth at the Spider Alumni Open and Snow took home a third-place finish in the first meet of the season, and the first of their careers. Also earning points at the Mason Invite were sophomore Johanna Lupica (Richmond, Va.) and senior Claire Brown (Erie, Pa.) finishing eighth and ninth, respectively.
The men are led by Clikeman, who in two races finished second and first, respectively, and has twice been the A-10's Male Performer of the Week. After finishing second in the 5k race at the Spider Alumni Open, the senior went on to win the 8k race at the Mason Invitational in convincing fashion as he was nearly 15 seconds faster than the next closest competitor.
Sophomore Peter Borger (Malvern, Pa.) has ran well in his own right, finishing fifth at the Spider Alumni Open and was the second-place finisher at the Mason Invitational. An A-10 All-Rookie Team honoree a season ago, Borger will look to improve upon his career-best 8k time of 25:23.6 that was set last season at the Paul Short Invitational.
The next three Spiders that helped the men finish in second at the Mason Invitational included Noah Campbell (Montpelier, Va.), Paul Knepple (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and Patrick Sutphin (Mechanicsville, Va.). This trio finished in 12th, 14th and 15th at the Oatlands, helping Richmond secure the second-place finish. In the field of 74 runners, three Spiders placed in the top half as James Flanagan (Danville, Calif.), Noah Yuro (Howell, N.J.) and Trey Burleson (Moseley, Va.) who came in 29th, 30th and 32nd, respectively.
The first race will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning, and the women's race is slotted for 10:15. Live results can be found on the schedule of the cross country page on RichmondSpiders.com.
