09/26/2019 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball program officially begins the Aaron Roussell era with its first practice in 2019-20 inside the Robins Center on Thursday afternoon.
The Spiders finished the 2018-19 season with a 9-21 overall record. Richmond lost in the first round of the A-10 Championship against sixth-seeded Saint Louis on the road 58-49. Richmond was a respectable 8-7 at home but struggled on the road finishing 1-13 away from the Robins Center.
Four of the five top scorers return with senior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) leading the way at 10.2 points per game and a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game. Junior Alex Parson (Chesterfield, Va.) led the team with 48 three-pointers made and averaged 10.2 points per game. Other top scorers were sophomores Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) and Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) each scoring 5.2 points per game. Holt finished the season with five-straight games in double figures, including a career-high 18 points against George Mason.
Richmond has added four newcomers to the mix in redshirt junior Kaila Clark (Hughesville, Md.) who sat out last season after transferring from Navy, freshman Celia Satter (Glencoe, Ill.) and two local natives Elaina Chapman (Richmond, Va.) and Angel Burgos (Richmond, Va.). Both players had highly successful high school careers at Trinity Episcopal with Chapman setting a new all-time scoring mark with over 2,000 points scored and Burgos dishing out over 500 assists.
The Spiders have 40 days to prepare for their first non-conference game of the season on the road at UNCG on Nov. 5 at 5:30 p.m. The schedule will be tough with seven of the first 10 games on the road.
